Butter a Day Keeps Diabetes Away

Most of us have heard the old saying, “An apple a day, keeps the doctor away”.  Not for me, butter a day keeps the doctor and diabetes away. Butter, real butter is truly diabetes friendly.

  • Fruits and vegetables will not keep the doctor away
  • High fat, real foods have kept my doctor away

If you eat high carb, glutenous, processed foods… an apple a day is NOT going to save you. To rephrase that, if you eat the product offerings by Big Food, fruits and vegetables are not going to save you. I know, I ate fruits often. A bowl of fruit was a mainstay on our counter both while growing up and in my adult years.

butter is truly diabetes friendly.

A butter a day keeps diabetes away and has helped erase my need for doctors. I have not been to the doctor for diabetes or any sickness reason since 2009. Most days my breakfast is a little butter and/or coconut oil in my coffee, or I will just have black coffee.

Fruits Before Diabetes

With 100% certainty I can tell you eating a lot of fruit  will not keep the doctor away. I ate a lot of fruit and vegetables  growing up and into my adult years.  Yes, I ate a lot of processed ‘junk’ but much of that was deemed ‘healthy’ by the so-called nutritional experts.  Items like Nutrigrain Bars, sugary fruit juices, cereals, whole grain breads, etc.

Bottom Line:

Consuming a lot of fruits, fruit juices and vegetables did not prevent me from seeing the doctor regularly throughout my youth and into my adult years, leading ultimately to a diabetes diagnosis.

Low Carb Paleo

I received a diabetes diagnosis and was placed on a diabetes drug, a cholesterol drug, a hypertension drug and insulin.  Immediately I began to crank down the carbohydrates and increasing the fats. Funny thing happened.

The more fat I consumed and the less carbs I consumed… I needed less and less drugs and insulin.  Hmmmm.  I’ve been drug and insulin free since 2009!

I began eating the exact opposite of recommendations by the  American Diabetes Association (ADA).  The ADA promotes a low fat, high carb, grain based meal plan and the ADA goes to great length to stress the “evil” of saturated animal fats, blaming fat for both obesity and diabetes.

My low carb paleo meal plan is very different from the ADA’s diabetes diet.  I eat a high fat, moderate protein and VERY low carb diabetes diet.

By the way, since adopting a high fat, moderate protein, low carb paleo meal plan I have not seen a doctor due to illness, including diabetes since 2009.

A high fat meal plan has kept the doctor away!

Note: I did go to the Emergency Room after a biking accident dislocated my shoulder in 2013. I may or may not have seen a doctor in the Emergency Room.  So except for possibly an Emergency Room doc, as of 2016 I have not seen a doctor since 2009!

Butter a Day Experiment

To provide evidence of the integrity of my ‘lifestyle’, I decided to try a simple experiment back in 2011.

NOTE: I am NOT suggesting nor implying that YOU should eat this way. I am merely demonstrating that I can. :)

Below is a picture of my breakfast for 5 days in a row. Each day I ate a stick of butter which is 4 oz or 1/4 lb of butter. I like saying 1/4 lb, it sounds more ‘substantial’. :)

I did not gain nor lose weight for the week. I ate approximately the same amount of food.

butter

I perform 18-20 hour fasts  (skipping breakfast)  regularly and often workout in a fasted state … so performing workouts after eating 1/4 lb of butter for breakfast was no big deal.

Each day the stick of butter was consumed for breakfast with my coffee. I took my time and the stick lasted about 30 minutes each day.

Also each day, around lunch time I would perform my normal and typical workouts, these included sprinting, squats, plyometrics and kettlebell swings. On the fifth day I added an extra treat, I ran 7.14 miles.

By the way, I had not run ‘distance’ in about four months. I definitely did not have a drop off in energy during the 5 day butter for breakfast testing. My energy level is something I was interested in testing but the MAIN reason I wanted to do this experiment?

Butter a Day Keeps Diabetes Away

On the morning of the 5th day, before eating or drinking anything, soon after waking I performed an Overnight Fasting Blood Sugar test.  I received a reading of 76 mg/dl, by anyone’s standard this is EXCELLENT! This is a normal blood sugar reading… for non-diabetics. :)

This ‘test’ does not by itself prove that butter keeps diabetes at bay but it is more evidence on top of all the previous evidence that a high fat, moderate protein and low carb meal plan will help YOU control your diabetes as well.

Fact: a high fat, moderate protein, very low carb paleo meal plan can keep the doctor away.   I’ve not seen a doctor due to diabetes or any illness in almost 8 years.

Fact: Eating a high fat diet with coconut oil and butter keeps diabetes away.

Winning! :)

  1. I would love to eat a stick of butter for breakfast. And to think for over 15 years I barley touched it.
Congrats on the # Cooksey :))

    1. Thanks Joy… hmmm good!

Who WOULD have thought that when we first met… two years later we’d be talking about the joys of eating a stick of animal fat…. LOL!

  2. The body, in the absence of cho will not metabolize dietary fat… It will also not store it… it will NOT raise BG, in the absence of cho… Problem we get with butter, is putting it on a potato or bread or having it while eating a cho diet.
