Beef Heart … worth a 2nd look

Beef heart is definitely worth a second look.   This post’s main purpose is to try to get you to do just that. :)

Here is my first post on Beef Heart, “Have a Heart” … kind of witty title, don’t you think? :)

The meat deserves a 2nd look … in more ways than one.

I am going to lead off with the nutritional information and then go through the steps I took to cook the meal and show the pictures of the beef heart. :)

BEFORE I do, I just want to post a couple links about opening your ‘mind’ to new foods,  ”Say I Can” and “Bizarre Foods = Variety“.

NUTRIENTS!

Here is the nutritional content of beef heart.

First… just the Protein, Fats and Carbohydrates.  As you can see Beef Heart is relatively low in fat and high in protein.  (with -0- carbs)

The serving size is only 4 oz … I ate at least 16 ounces (4 servings) for lunch today. Just so you know, I did not eat breakfast so this was my first meal of the day.

Note:  Take a look at the Vitamin C … with 4 servings I had a respectable 16% of ‘supposed’ vitamin C requirements and I have all of my Iron requirements covered.

Many people are not aware of the vitamins in ‘organ meats’ with Beef Liver having the most vitamins.

In addition to vitamin C, 4 oz of Beef heart also has significant amounts of Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, B6 and B12.

Next up… Minerals!     Yes indeed! :)

Remember… the numbers below are for ONLY 4 0z.    As you can see below … it’s full of minerals… this is not just a high protein food.

…okay now for the main event.

We now know it is nutritious … but how did taste?   FABULOUS!!! :)

I had braised it in the past and it was good … BUT grilling was so much BETTER!!!

Steps in Preparation

1)  Here is a picture of a label … the main thing I want you to see is the Grass Fed, Grass Finished  note on the label.   Also note the date packed, this meat is less than a month old… and it tasted awesome!

I purchased this at T & D Farms, click here for a post I did on our visit.   I have been SO HAPPY with all of meats we received from them.

2) I Rinsed the Beef Heat in water and patted dry.  I also cut the heart into 3 pieces so it would lay more flat on the grill.

3) Brushed Extra Virgin Olive Oil on the Beef Heart to prevent the meat sticking to the grill.

4) Began GRILLING!   I like my meat medium rare, the heart is a thick piece of meat so I cooked these about 20 minutes.

5)  Remove from the grill and let it sit for about 5 minutes … and EAT!

Seriously… this is all I had to eat for lunch. No veggies… and it was so good.

Another look… :)

It truly was that simple…. rinse, brush on olive oil, grill… remove and EAT!

Summary

I ate a plate full of meat ‘naked’ … no flavoring of any kind and it was delicious.   On my next plate I added some spices and it too was good.

I urge you to enjoy the various flavors, textures and nutrients of a variety of meats … it’s my opinion that it will only strengthen your ability to stay ‘paleo’ and it will help you eat a wide variety of nutrients as well.

I thoroughly enjoy the way I eat, the way I exercise… indeed the WAY I LIVE!!!
