I have got the diet part down, been on a diet that's similar to the Paleo, lots meat, no wheat/gluten, no processed foods, for better than two months now. That going great. Now I need to research diabetes. Here's our story. Husband (65) T2 diabetes for 6 yrs. Insulin twice a day, meds 4 pills a day. Me (55), T2 diabetes currently using Victosa to manage. After better diet, husband lost 23 lbs. so far, off of insulin completely, cutting back on pills. Me, lost about 20 so far. Both feel great and don't want to stop! I need to understand our blood sugar readings better, find out why they flexuate so much through the day. When should I take blood sugars thru the day and what do the readings mean? I'm not sure if my husband gets a morning fasting reading of 140 even means, should I be happy should I be sad? Is there a basic beginners plan? Appreciate your help.
You want fasting numbers under 100, preferably 60-90. The normal "diabetic" range for 2 hours post meal is under 140 but that is on a standard American ADA high carb diet. I would recommend testing first thing in the morning, 2 hours post meal and before bed. Not sure what you mean by "beginners plan". What exactly are you looking for?
Here is a beginner's program. Eat 30 grams of TOTAL carbs per day (do not count net carbs) ... or less until your blood sugars stabilize in the sub 100 mg/dl range while in a fasted state.
Thanks everyone. Allison you answered my beginners question. I was wondering how 'often' to test and 'when' to test and what the numbers should be. Steve, we are definitely trying to stay below 30 carbs per day (no, it's not always easy!) as we also have weight to lose. My husband is off the insulin but still taking the medication as we are having a hard time getting those low numbers (60/70) than everyone says is optimum for good health as well as trying to get steady readings instead of jumping around. His reading will range from 70's to 160 which is way better than before but still not perfect. He also has that issue where his fasting numbers will jump up. I take Victosa and am doing great. I continue to take the Victosa because it keeps my appetite down but need to get off of that stuff too because of the damage it can do to the pancreas. Thanks for everyone's help. I may not know a lot of things, but I do know that we both feel like new people since we started eating right. I intend to figure this all out and keep my old man around for years to come.
Thanks for the web sites Steve. I also wanted to give EricH the web site to Kris' forum. One can never have too many friends and people to lean on. I didn't think you'd mind Steve as you talk about Kris on your web site. Thanks again everyone.
