Dementia and Blood Sugar Are Linked

Dementia and blood sugar are linked. Elevated blood sugar is associated with an increased risk of dementia. This is not ‘new news’, why do the masses not know this?

  • blood sugars in elevated but normal ranges linked to cognitive decline
  • brain shrinkage is associated with elevated but normal ranges

Why are normal blood sugars ranges, as provided by the medical industry, associated with health issues including dementia?  Answer: The medical industry blood sugar targets are not accurate.

At the end of this post I will tell you my target ranges and why I chose them.  For now let’s look at more evidence supporting the claims in the post introduction above.  Why isn’t your doctor or diabetes educator telling you this?

Not only are elevated blood sugars linked to dementia but elevated ‘normal ranges’ are associated with dementia.

Lower Blood Sugar Good for the Brain

According to this  American Academy of Neurology 2013 study  lower levels of blood sugars are better for the brain.  Keep in mind the study subjects were NOT diabetic nor were they pre-diabetic. They were considered normal, non-diabetics by the Medical Industry.  The study also excluded people who were overweight or who drank more than 3.5 servings of alcohol per day.

“People with lower blood sugar levels were more likely to have better scores on the memory tests.”

Therefore…

“These results suggest that even for people within the normal range of blood sugar, lowering their blood sugar levels could be a promising strategy for preventing memory problems and cognitive decline as they age,” said study author Agnes Flöel, MD, of Charité University Medicine in Berlin, Germany.

BOOM!

Did you get this?  EVEN people in the upper levels of normal blood ranges experience cognitive decline.

I do not know what the researchers considered normal blood sugar ranges … but what is important is that once again elevated blood sugars, in normal ranges are linked to increased risk of dementia.

Elevated Blood Sugar Causing Brain Shrinkage?

In this study from 2012 also from the American Academy of Neurology looks at the effect of blood sugars that were on the high end of normal ranges.

The study involved 249 people age 60 to 64 who had blood sugar in the normal range as defined by the World Health Organization. The participants had brain scans at the start of the study and again an average of four years later.

The World Health Organization’s ‘normal’ fasting range is below 110 mg/dl.

After controlling for age, high blood pressure, smoking, alcohol use and other factors, the researchers found that blood sugar on the high end of normal accounted for six to 10 percent of the brain shrinkage.

Wow, blood sugar on the high end of normal is linked to brain shrinkage!

Still MORE evidence linking elevated ‘normal’ blood sugars with increased risk of dementia.

Why does Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, American Diabetes Association and the American Association of Diabetes Educators promote a meal plan that RAISES blood sugars?

I talk to diabetics all the time who come to me because their Medical Industry professional has them eating a high carb, grain based meal plan… for diabetes, heart, kidney or liver health reasons.

High Blood Sugars are damaging to every cell and therefore every organ in the body!!! … including the brain.

If medical industry professionals want to protect patient’s organs including the brain,  heart, liver and kidneys, the Medical Industry Professionals need to stop promoting a grain based, high carb meal plan!

Second, the medical industry professionals need to stop providing harmful blood sugar ranges to diabetics.  See below…

My Blood Sugar Targets

This post and the companion post “My Diabetes Blood Sugar Targets and Why” should highlight a couple of points for you.

1 – The Medical Industry has NO FREAKING IDEA what ‘normal’ blood sugar ranges truly are.

NORMAL BLOOD SUGAR RANGES should not increase the risk of dementia!  It should not be linked to brain shrinkage! It should NOT increase the risk of cell or organ damage.

The Medical Industry is clueless… that should be obvious.

2 –  In both this post and the previously mentioned post bad things are more likely to happen when fasting blood sugar levels reach 100 mg/dl and higher.

Why not set your targets in a truly safe range?   That way, if you miss your targets you are not increasing your risks appreciably.

That is why I set my targets as …

60-90 mg/dl for fasting.

100mg/dl all other times.   I do exceed 100 mg/dl when exercising intensely.

Why isn’t your medical industry professional telling you this?

If your blood sugars are elevated and you can not achieve my numbers…

Reduce Your Blood Sugar The Warrior Way

Below is my personal ‘diabetes care’ manual. It is truly diabetes friendly, not Big Food, Big Pharma and Medical Industry friendly.  Every person who follows my plan improves blood sugar control.

Not coincidentally, each person who follows my diabetes care plan reduces the profits of Big Food, Big Pharma and the Medical Industry.
