This post was originally going to be about an entire meal … but the pictures of the PRIMAL Slaw were so appealing … that I decided to make this a one item post.
PRIMAL SLAW! I eat this soooo rarely (once a month or two)… that it truly is special treat.
Given the changes in my meal plan (low carb primal) … vegetables that are moderately high in carbs (relatively) … taste sweet to me. It may be difficult for someone on the Standard American Diet (SAD) to understand … but with cabbage and tomatoes combined… this ‘dish’ truly does taste sweet… almost like a dessert. :))
So how do you make primal slaw??
The ingredients can vary based on your favorite veggies but this post will show how I make mine. The main ingredients are cabbage, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Apple Cider Vinegar, Tony Chachere’s (or salt and pepper) and Texas Pete (or your favorite hot sauce).
Notes:
- This slaw was so BEAUTIFUL … I had to take more pictures than I intended…AND the family loved it. I love HOT, SPICY foods … if you do not, then I suggest you take that in consideration.
- I make this in advance and place in the refrigerator to cool. I like my slaw cool, makes a nice contrast with the hot/warm meats. Plus, making this in advance reduces some of the stress during meal prep… especially since I usually only eat a meat with the slaw. :)
Steps
1) Chop Up desired amount of Cabbage … or as I did this time… I actually bought the cabbage pre-chopped. (GASP!) :)
2) Slice and Dice Vegetables - this time I only added tomato (two small tomatoes)… in times past I’ve added onions, green peppers … explore and experiment… see what YOU like best. :)

Notice how I left the one half of tomato sliced...while the other was diced... uh that's a PRO blogger move. :) JK!!!!
3) Add the rest of the ingredients… to taste. And stir/mix VERY WELL. :)
Below are the amounts I added.
- 4 TBS of Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVO)
- 4 TBS of Apple Cider Vinegar …. I love this stuff. Has many uses…. in and out of the kitchen.
- 4 Caps of Texas Pete
- Tony Chachere’s and Black Pepper to taste. - this is where I erred… I added too much black pepper. It was fine for me and my son… but “The Wife” did not like it.
4) Remove from the refrigerator …. and add to freshly prepared MEAT!!! … in this case Bacon Braised Salmon!!
Summary:
Hope you enjoy this side dish … its’ a favorite of mine and goes well with many meats… fish, burgers, steak and chicken.
Something about the cabbage and EVOO with the vinegar and tomato combined, makes this seem so sweet!! I LOVE IT!
Depending on your cabbage and tomato this slaw can have approximately 5-7 grams of carbohydrates. I probably had about two cups with this meal … I had seconds. :)
Point being… AS ALWAYS … KNOW what you are eating and how it will affect YOUR blood sugar.
